Getting down to e-business

The Web. E-business or e-commerce (take your pick). Intranets. The word is that you have to "be there or be square" (or more precisely behind the eight-ball) -- if you're in business and want to stay there. But there are more than a few questions to have ask your partners and of your business before you embark on what can be a perilous journey.

Many CEOs and other top managers still haven't seen the light regarding the impact of the Web on their organisation's success in the 21st century. CIOs and IS executives should be in the vanguard to show that future corporate survival includes embracing the Net and using it to achieve your business objectives.

In our special report on e-business this month CIO provides some valuable information about the Net that should raise executive's interest in jumping on the bandwagon now. Regular contributor Sue Bushell spoke with Gartner Group and Deloitte & Touche Consulting experts and put together two "cut-to-the-quick" and informative stories. We've also included a story which suggests just how IS, Marketing and the CEO could get along with Web deployment in a perfect world.

While most people focus on when consumer purchases will be made via the Web, business-to-business sales are today's driving factor and will be bigger in the future. Cisco Systems is an enviable example, increasing sales, lowering its sales and service costs and increasing customer satisfaction. Another pioneer, Dell Computer, is doing more than $US2 million in online sales a day.

The best is yet to come in terms of how you'll prosper via the Internet. One thing is for sure though -- your business has to be there or it will be "spare".

Good reading.
