Happy SysAdmin day!

Happy SysAdmin day!

A big thanks to all system administrators - you keep the world running.

It’s a day when the unsung heroes of the IT community – systems administrators – finally (and hopefully) receive the thanks they deserve.

The last Friday in July marks the 10th annual System Administrator Appreciation Day – an international day that aims to highlight the issues faced by system administrators and provide an opportunity to say ‘thank you’ for all those late nights fighting malware, blackouts and internet outages.

And while expansive gifts of red Ferraris and Powerball Jackpot windfalls are probably out of the question, a small thank you gift (or perhaps even a quenching ale) will go a long way to helping the cause.

“A SysAdmin unpacked the server for this website from its box, installed an operating system, patched it for security, made sure the power and air conditioning was working in the server room, monitored it for stability, set up the software, and kept backups in case anything went wrong. All to serve this webpage,” says the SysAdminDay Web site, which provides a range of gift ideas to celebrate the special day, as well as an explanation of what a system administration does and tongue in cheek advice to employees on the proper way to use a system administrator’s time.

You can also keep track of the thank you messages and add your own on Twitter using the #sysadminday hash tag.

So happy SysAdmin day for 2009.
