Phoenix doubling staff at India development center

The company is adding new product management and architecture functions at the center

Phoenix Technologies is doubling the number of staff at its Indian development center to 120 in the next six months, and also adding new functions such as product architecture and management, the company said on Friday.

The scope of the center in Bangalore is being expanded to include development of new Phoenix technologies such as its HyperSpace always-on computing environment for PCs, said Kirthiga Reddy, Phoenix's vice president and general manager for India.

Phoenix set up the center in 2005 and has invested about US$10 million in it so far, Reddy said. It now plans to invest $20 million more in the center in the next few years.

The center already works with PC vendors and ODMs (original design manufacturers) that are using Phoenix's technologies in their products, she added.

The company also has development centers in San Jose, Taipei, Seattle, Portland, and Boston.

Phoenix's development of core systems and BIOS is distributed between teams on the West coast of the U.S. and in Taiwan, because of their proximity to centers of activity in these fields, said Woodson Hobbs, Phoenix's president and CEO.

When it comes to products like HyperSpace, they could be developed from any location like India if they get their specifications right, he added.
