Volvo sets up IT control center in India

The new center in Bangalore manages Volvo's computers, communications and networks

Volvo IT has set up a global command center in Bangalore that will manage and support infrastructure, networks and computers remotely for various entities of its parent, the Volvo Group.

Except for mainframes, for which the expertise does not exist at the center in Bangalore, the India center will work around the clock to run the IT operations in 17 locations worldwide, said Satish Rajkumar, head of Volvo IT India, on Tuesday.

Before the move to consolidate the operation in one location, Volvo had staff at each of these locations delivering the services, Rajkumar said.

Problems will still be referred to local country teams if they cannot be resolved by the command center, he added.

Besides meeting in-house IT requirements of Volvo, Volvo IT also does work for other customers. The remote management of the computers and other IT infrastructure of some of these clients will also be done from India, Rajkumar said.

By creating one central organization for service monitoring in Bangalore, Volvo IT gets increased economies of scale, and can offer Volvo and other customers a unified, global picture of the performance of their most important computer systems, Volvo IT said.

Volvo IT in India has for the last four years been running the IT infrastructure for Volvo's operation in the country. It also does application development in India.

It has about 120 employees in India, besides some 400 staff placed by contractors. The center has 80 employees, and about 30 staff from contractors who will work at the new center, Rajkumar said.
