Netflix coming to the PlayStation 3

The streaming service will start in November

Netflix will begin streaming movies and TV shows to PlayStation 3 consoles in the U.S. from November, it said on Monday.

The new service will be available at no extra cost to Netflix members. Console owners who do not have a Netflix account will be required to join the service to access the content.

Netflix customers who own a PlayStation 3 have hoped for a streaming service to the console for some time. Some third-party applications have previously been developed to allow the streaming but have required complex setup.

The official service will work with a Blu-ray Disc that Netflix will offer to all members.

To watch on-demand content PlayStation 3 owners will have to insert the disc and activate a Netflix interface on the console. From there streaming content will appear.

The content will be organized into categories based on the user's preference and additional content can be added via the console or a PC Web browser.

Access to Netflix content has been available on the Xbox 360 since last year.
