Rackspace launches iPad app for the cloud

Keep tabs on your servers from the beach

Rackspace Cloud has launched an application for developers that allows them to monitor their servers from the newly released iPad. CloudPro enables users to turn on backups for a server, create new servers, manage scheduling, and re-boot or delete servers.

The company said that the application would also offer information on the state of the entire Rackspace cloud and would also enable developers to be able to ping an IP address of any cloud server to assess the responsiveness of that server. The company said that such functionality would enable users to work effectively outside their own offices and, by using the iPad, developers would be able to work with enterprise-quality server management.

Rackspace said that it was also looking to contribute to open cloud computing standards and was contributing to many community initiatives including the development of open source databases such as Cassandra and Drizzle.

"The iPad and Cloud servers can lower the entry barriers for web start-ups everywhere because they no longer have to make large investments in hardware to get their businesses going," stated Mike Mayo, developer, Rackspace Hosting. "I also believe the mobility and functionality made possible by the iPad and The Rackspace Cloud will change the way we work because we are now unchained from our desktops and offices. You can control your servers from wherever you are - in a meeting, at dinner or at the beach."

The free CloudPro application is now available at iTunes.
