Sony Ericsson's Xperia X10 family to get Android 2.1 in Q4

Smaller update to arrive with a few weeks

Sony Ericsson's Xperia X10, X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro will all get upgraded from Android 1.6 to version 2.1 during the fourth quarter, the phone vendor said in a blog post on Wednesday.

After the upgrade, the Xperia X10 will be able to record video at 720p and connect to other consumer electronics devices using DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance). Sony Ericsson will improve their own additions to Android, Timescape and Mediascape, as well. The two applications organize messages such as Twitter posts, Facebook updates and SMS messages, as well as phone calls and multimedia.

Prior to the big upgrade, the X10 will get a smaller software update. It will arrive in the next couple of weeks and aims to enhance the usability and performance on the X10, according to the blog post.

The use of version 1.6 on the Xperia Android devices has irked many users. The blog post thanks them for their patience, and acknowledges that the timing for the upgrade might not meet some of their expectations.

Today, the Xperia X10 is available in most parts of the world, though not in the U.S., and Sony Ericsson doesn't have anything new to announce on that front, according to a spokeswoman. The X10 Mini and Mini Pro will go on sale by the end of the second quarter.
