Deploys Google Apps to standardise and cut costs of email hosting

Designer fashion house Roberto Cavalli has decided to standardises its email systems by moving to the Google cloud.

The company recently moved all its employees, 500 global users, from FTgate email servers to Google's Gmail platform. This is part of the company's deployment of Google Apps Premier Edition.

According to Roberto Cavalli, the migration will help it achieve "considerable cost savings" as multiple email servers, that were maintained internally or outsourced to an external provider, will no longer be required.

Furthermore, using Google's web-based email platform means that staff can send and receive emails from any internet-enabled device anywhere in the world, as well as access a shared calendar for meeting planning.

The company also plans to use the Message Translation function, which can translate emails from and into 42 different languages, to facilitate communication across the global business.

Next month, the company plans to construct an intranet that will be hosted in Google Sites. This will be used to organise, search and share Roberto Cavalli's entire picture archive of collections and catwalk shows. Currently, staff send large image files over email, and have to search for images in archives and folders.

Moreover, staff will be able to upload catwalks videos into Google Video so that they can be shown in real-time in all the company's retail stores.

A number of companies have turned to Google's Gmail platform to standardise email systems across the business, including Rentokil Initial.
