Telcos provide free access to LinkedIn mobile app

Social networking site, LinkedIn, has partnered with Optus and 3 to provide free access to the LinkedIn mobile application.

Optus will provide new and existing customers with unlimited access to the business networking tool while 3 will offer free access to new customers entering a post-paid contract.

Managing director of LinkedIn Australia, Clifford Rosenberg, said he was not surprised by the news; the site attracts 1.5 million members in the Australia and New Zealand region and being adopted by business people wanting to gain an edge over their competitors or learn more about co-workers.

"We are experiencing tremendous growth in Australia and the partnerships will further drive mobile usage of LinkedIn,” Rosenberg said. “LinkedIn’s mobile application allows professionals to connect with colleagues on the go or search for a member’s professional profile ahead of a business meeting.”

The news comes as a new service has been launched by fans of the location-based networking tool, Foursquare. Tidysquare lets 'superusers' ‘clean up’ venue maps on Foursquare, and provides a forum for regular users to report corrections on venues.

Smartphones and mobile devices can pose a security dilemma for many CIOs, and developing a social media policy is becoming an increasingly-discussed issue by IT professionals. At last month’s CIO summit in Sydney, a CIO Executive Council panel agreed the development of such a policy isn’t all about IT.
