VHA increases Vodafone, 3 mobile data allowances

Mobile Internet use triples in a year

Vodafone Hutchison Australia, the company formed out of the merger of the Vodafone and 3 brands, has increased the data download allowances for its capped voice and mobile broadband plans.

VHA will at least double – and on some plans offer up to four times – the amount of data included on all caps for the same price for new and customers who upgrade their plans.

The $19 cap was $2 per megabyte extra, but now it includes 100MB of data. The $29 cap is 200MB (was 50MB), the $49 cap 1.5GB (was 500MB), $59 Cap 2GB (was 750MB), and the $79 cap is 2GB, up from 1GB.

At the high-end the $99 cap is up from 2GB to 3GB of data per month. Most plans offer unlimited calls to other Vodafone and 3 handsets.

VHA puts the move down to increasing consumer demand for mobile Internet and 3G services.

As of 30 June 2010, 2.3 million customers are using mobile broadband or 3G services on their handsets, up by 150.2 per cent from June 2009, according to the company.

VHA marketing director John Casey said customers’ affinity with mobile Internet and social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter is growing day by day.

“We’re meeting that demand by increasing the data in our caps,” Casey said.

Vodafone and 3 now offer the iPhone 4 and Android-powered Sony Ericsson X10 for $0 upfront on a new $59 Promo Cap over 24-months. This includes $650 worth of call value, 2GB of data, and unlimited standard SMS and MMS.

The contract is available between August 25 and November 25, 2010.

“iPhone 4 is very hot right now, and Android is the next big thing in mobile phones and the Android-based Sony Ericsson X10 is a great device, so making both available for $0 upfront is something we know our customers will love,” Casey said.
