Palm releases WebOS 2 details

Palm posted details about the next version of WebOS and is inviting developers to sign up for access to new developer tools.

After some initial uncertainty about the future of WebOS immediately after the Palm-HP merger, it's looking more and more like WebOS has a real future ahead of it.

Pre-Central reports on a number of details about WebOS 2.0, the next major version of Palm's smartphone OS. Improvements and new features include some updates to its multitasking interface, improved HTML5 support, bolstered universal search and more.

Palm's improved search feature, Just Type, can now be used inside WebOS apps, and developers can now create "Quick Actions," which will let you perform certain tasks--such as create a list or send an e-mail--simply by typing into the search field. It sounds similar in concept to the Quicksilver app for Mac OS X, but we have yet to see it in action.

Also new is what Palm is calling Exhibition: when you dock your WebOS phone, it'll be able to display widget-like information apps. Pre-Central mentions slideshows, stock ticker apps, and clocks among the possible uses for this feature.

Palm also released a beta of its new WebOS development tools. Palm has a section on its developer site that describes some of the new features in detail, and lets you sign up for its Early Access Program for developers.
