BT to expand aggressively in APAC

The global telco has announced infrastructure upgrades and key executive appointments as it expands its presence throughout Asia including Australia.

Global telecommunication services provider British Telecommunications (BT) has unveiled details of its growth plans for the Asia-Pacific region. These included investments in IT infrastructure and new staff in the region, starting with the appointment of a Southeast Asian head.

The newly appointed South-East Asia CEO of BT is Stephen Yeo. He will be based in Singapore.

Yeo is the first among the 300 key executives that BT plans to hire across Asia as part of its major expansion plans aimed at enhancing its services. The new staff members will be fielded in "key customer markets" for BT, including Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan and Singapore. BT said that around 80 percent of its largest global customers in terms of turnover are expanding in Asia.

In Singapore, BT plans to establish a "bid response center" with capabilities to pursue large deals for managed services, an area that BT claims global leadership in. The build-up of staff and infrastructure is in line with BT's plans to further expand its portfolio of services in the region.

The announcement provided details on BT's May 2010 broad announcement of new investments in the region.

Customer services

CEO BT Global Services, Jeff kelly, said these investments were necessary to enable the company to serve its customers better. Other investments will include building up BT's professional services capability in the region.

"The first phases of our investment program will globalise the key propositions and services our customers require from us. We are also building out our professional services capability in the region to serve the needs of even the largest customers. All this will help accelerate the profitable growth of our business in the region," he added.

BT also said that it is making enhancements on services and making available new ones. Among these: in-region capabilities in managed networked IT solutions including voice and Internet Protocol (IP) services; managed security; unified communications; contact centre capabilities; mobility, and, data centre support.

To reach out to more customers, BT is set to open new technology showcase centres in Beijing, Delhi, Hong Kong, Singapore and Sydney. These centres will give customers an opportunity to see first hand some of BT's leading edge technologies and solutions.

BT has also said that it will expand its channel partner network and work closely with them.
