NComputing outs enterprise-grade desktop virtualization unit

Enterprises may now deploy up to 30 desktop computers using the power of only one server, as NComputing recently outed its L300 desktop virtualization unit made primarily for enterprise use, a company executive announced Wednesday.

Following its recent announcement of the USB-powered U170 for SMBs, NComputing follows the line with the L300, which promises reliable and secure desktop virtualization for enterprises, claimed Manish Sharma, the company's vice president for Asia Pacific.

With the LAN-powered L300, firms can now connect at least 30 computing units to a central server over vast distances, making it ideal for firms with data center setups.

With this feature, Sharma said firms can even utilize Amazon's IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service) offerings and run the units off of the cloud, slashing footprints significantly.

The system works by installing the accompanying vSpace software over a central server, which pushes virtual machine sessions to the units at a simple drag and drop of the mouse through an automatic deployment manager at the central server.

Interestingly, firms can multiply the number of users who use the unit by integrating the solution with virtualization at a server level, which also allows companies to install the vSpace software on different operating systems.

The L300 unit also supports an automatic fail-over feature, which "automatically connects the devices to the next available server during server downtimes or maintenance," Sharma shared.

But one of the biggest benefits of the new unit, according to Sharma, is that it is secure and reliable by design. "This is highly secure and reliable because there is practically nothing inside," he stressed, adding that viruses can't reside on systems which don't have storage parts.

Aside from immediate cost-savings from buying the virtualization unit instead of a full-fledged desktop, firms can save on operating system licenses as well, since companies would only need to purchase an OS for the server.

Subsequent license use for the units, however, will only be charged through a client license for every end-user unit (if it is running Microsoft Windows), which Sharma says is significantly cheaper than full-fledged desktop licenses.

For the suggested price of P12,900 per unit, Sharma said the L300 is the only unit with an unmatched price-performance ratio in the market.

NComputing's L300 desktop virtualization unit is distributed by Mustard Seed Systems and Software Nth power, Inc., nationwide.
