Mitsubishi to launch modular OLED screen

The screen, targeted at outdoor display applications, can be built to almost any size

Mitsubishi Electric will begin selling this month a modular display that can be built to almost any size by combining square display blocks. The screen is based on OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology and is intended for advertising and public display applications.

Each display block measures 384 millimeters square and has a resolution of 128 pixels by 128 pixels.

The pixels are larger than those in monitors or televisions, so up close the red, blue and green diodes that make up each pixel are readily apparent. Mitsubishi says the screen should be viewed from at least 2 meters away, but given its size it is unlikely viewers would want to get much closer.

It will go on sale worldwide from Sept. 21, which is almost a year to the day since Mitsubishi first showed off a prototype of the technology at Japan's Ceatec electronics show.

The 2009 prototype was made of smaller display modules combined to create a screen with a diagonal width of 155 inches. When viewed from a distance the prototype display showed bright, crisp images and attracted the attention of many show attendees. The new display will be on show at this year's Ceatec, which begins on Oct. 5.

Pricing for the screen was not announced.

Mitsubishi is targeting outdoor and public display applications that currently use LED screens such as the big screens in sports stadiums.
