The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) has extended its working relationship with General Electric (GE) through a $20 million agreement which will result in a number of new research and development (R&D) projects carried out in Australia during the next five years.
With the collaboration arrangement the two organisations will focus on ways in which to accelerate the delivery of health-related and environmental technology.
CSIRO chief executive, Dr Megan Clark, said the collaboration sought to address a number of major issues in the coming years.
“Improving the health and wellbeing of our communities and delivering cleaner technologies for energy and mobility are critical challenges for our future,” Clark said in a statement.
According to Clark, the partnership with GE will help expand Australia's R&D capability.
The alliance will also cover reserach projects in the areas of aviation -- particularly looking at ways to significantly reduce the amount of energy needed to construct and operate aircraft.
The development of molecular imaging technologies and exploring new biomarkers will also boost the understanding of healthcare.
There will be a focus on cleaner coal and coal gasification research, smart grids, specifically distributed energy and integrating renewable energy to the electricity grid, and developing technology to conserve water.
