SugarSync ups free backup, file-sharing capacity to 5GB

Current users will be automatically upgraded from the current 2GB free service starting Wednesday

File sharing and backup service provider SugarSync today announced that it has increased the capacity of its eponymous online storage offering from 2GB to 5GB.

The company said that current users of its free 2GB cloud-based storage service will be automatically upgraded to the higher-capacity service.

The SugarSync online backup and file sharing service can be used to manage documents, e-mail, music files, photos or video from any web-enabled device running any operating system. For example, SugarSync supports laptops, tablets like the Samsung Galaxy or Apple iPad, and a variety of smartphones, including the Blackberriy, multiple Android-based phones and the Apple iPhone.

"Statistics show people's storage needs double every two years so this larger plan is better suited for today's mobile consumer," Laura Yecies, CEO of SugarSync , said in a statement. "We believe our free 5 GB service will give consumers a true taste of how SugarSync can support their fast-growing digital lives by managing their data in their own Personal Cloud."

SugarSync also offers a free 30-day trial for its higher-capacity plans, which start at 30GB. The 30GB plan is priced at $4.99 per month.

The company also said that customers that refer their family, friends and colleagues to the free 5GB SugarSync account will earn 500MB of additional free online capacity for each referral. Users that refer people to paid programs receive 10GB of additional storage for each new subscriber.

Other file sharing and online backup services include Mobile Me, Windows Live Mesh, Syncplicity, and DropBox, SpiderOak, Memeo. Humyo , and Soonr.
