Pictures and specifications of what is claimed to be another upcoming Samsung Android phone with a larger than 4-inch display have been leaked by tech blog Engadget. Only yesterday the site posted pictures of an upcoming Google-branded Nexus S phone from Samsung, and this second device is also said to run on Android 2.3, Google's next major update of its mobile OS.
As with the Google Nexus S leak, Engadget is not revealing the source of its information or how it got possession of the two slides showing a new Samsung phone with a 4.3- or 4.5-inch display and 8-megapixel camera with LED flash. The site claims it is confident that the pictures originate from Samsung. PCWorld could not verify the authenticity of these pictures.
With the disclaimer out of the way, the specs of this alleged upcoming flagship Samsung Android phone are heartwarming. The device, which resembles the iPhone 4, is said to run on a 1.2GHz processor and the screen says SAMOLED2. Alongside 16GB of built-in memory, Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi, GPS and DLNA, the phone is also said to be able to record and play back 1080p videos, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread would put the wheels in motion.
As with most early leaks, there is no word on pricing, or whether or which U.S. carriers will sell the phone. Availability is slated for February 2011 according to the leaked slides; if true, this phone could make an appearance at the Mobile World Congress 2011, taking place in Barcelona, Spain February 14 through 17.
Before February, though, Google's second iteration from the Nexus line could make an appearance. According to reports, the Nexus S, manufactured by Samsung this time (Nexus One was manufactured by HTC) should arrive on Best Buy shelves in time for this holiday shopping season, adding a phone with a 4-inch display to T-Mobile's network.
Samsung, meanwhile, with a flagship Android device in development for next year and the next Google-branded phone in the making, can brag about sales numbers. The company says it has sold more than 7 million Android-powered Galaxy S phones worldwide, 3 million of which were in the U.S. And to keep Android rolling, Gartner's latest report says that Google's mobile OS is now number two in the world, outclassed only by Nokia, leaving Apple's iOS far behind.
