Alcatel-Lucent reaches out to operators in data explosion

The company packages tools to take closer look at network traffic

Alcatel-Lucent said on Wednesday that it is accelerating efforts to help mobile operators analyze the traffic growth in their networks, make changes and offer subscribers higher speeds.

Its new Wireless Network Optimization Solution includes a mixture of tools and Alcatel-Lucent's in-house expertise. Analyzing and the optimizing a network isn't just about collecting data, but also being able to understand the results and know what action to take, according to Jean Jones, director of services marketing at Alcatel-Lucent.

The tools are, for example, used to do RF (Radio Frequency) design audits, to see what is actually happening in the network, and remote network monitoring, to be able to spot traffic trends before they result in unhappy subscribers.

For operators and subscribers, optimizing the mobile network can improve throughput by more than 20 per cent, by utilizing what the operator has in a more efficient way, according to Jones. The need for traffic management has been the most acute in the U.S., but operators in other parts of the world have also understood how important it is, she said.

Managing rapid traffic growth has become a must for mobile operators, and therefore it is also something that makes sense for the vendors to offer, according to Mark Newman, chief research officer at Informa Telecoms and Media.

It is a sector where operators can turn to the established telecommunications vendors, like Alcatel-Lucent. But there are also a growing number of smaller companies that have set their sights on traffic management, including Allot Communications, Bridgewater Systems, BroadHop and Telcordia Technologies, Newman said.
