A new public cloud service, dubbed BitCloud, has launched in Sydney with the aim of simplifying cloud hosting for small and medium-sized businesses.

BitCloud hosting starts at $15 per month and parameters like CPU, disk and network capacity can be configured via a Web interface.

The entry-level parameters are a single core 400MHz CPU, 512MB, 5GB of SAN storage and 10GB of monthly data traffic.

BitCloud CEO, Bennett Oprysa, said the cloud platform was developed over the past six months using a combination of Dell blade servers and SANs and the Xen and OpenVZ hypervisors.

“We have experience with virtualisation and clustering with our other hosting brands,” Oprysa said. “Now the cloud has its own equipment.”

BitCloud was developed by Bucan Holdings which has run ISP and hosting businesses since the mid-nineties.

The cloud is located at the Global Switch data centre in Sydney and the phone support and head office is in Parramatta.

BitCloud is promising 99.9 per cent uptime and 24/7 phone support.

Oprysa said the company has also developed a control panel for systems management like virtual server reboots and other administration tools that interfaces with the Xen and OpenVZ APIs.

BitCloud’s head of strategy and sales, Darren Covington, said there are a number of cloud players vying for a piece of the large enterprise business, but the small and medium enterprise space remains largely underserved, partly due to the perceived complexity of cloud computing.

“We want to make it simple for small and medium businesses to procure IT infrastructure without the upfront costs,” he said.

“We will also partner with software vendors and our channel model is based around ISVs developing apps on BitCloud.”
