How we tested cloud management

The machines used included two Dell 1950s (one has 16GB RAM, other has 8GB, both have eight cpu cores), one HP DL585 G5 (32GB RAM, 16 cpu cores), one HP DL580 G5 (32GB RAM, 16 cpu cores), Dell Optiplex 740 (three-core AMD, 4GB RAM).

For backend storage, we used a Compellent 6.33TB iSCSI/FC SAN and an Apple XServe was used for NFS storage support. All nodes and platforms were connected to an Extreme Networks 10Gbps 24-port Summit X650-24T switch.

For Cloud.com's cloudstack, the HP DL580 G5 was used as the XenServer node, and a VM running CentOS 5.5 x64 under ESXi 4.1 on the 8GB Dell 1950 was the management platform.

For Eucalyptus Enterprise Edition, the Dell Optiplex 740 was used as the management platform running openSUSE 11.2 x64 and ESXi 4.1 on the HP DL580 and KVM on the DL585 was used as nodes.

For Citrix LabManager with self-service portal, the HP DL580 G5 was used as the XenServer management/node platform, and the LabManager VM (used Windows Server 2003 r2) additional XenServer nodes could also be added (only one LabManager VM is necessary). The license server ran on a VM on the Dell 1950 (16GB).

For Novell CloudManager, two VMs running SLES 11, one for the application service and one for the orchestrate server ran on the Dell 1950 (8GB) under ESXi 4.1. Another ESXi 4.1 server was used as the node (HP DL580).

For OpenNebula, a VM running Ubuntu Server 10.04 on the Dell 1950 (8GB) under ESXi 4.1 was the management platform and Ubuntu Server 10.04 with KVM was running on the HP DL585.

For the node instances, we tried a few main operating systems including SLES 11, Ubuntu Server 10.04, Windows 2003 Server R2, Windows 7, and Windows 2008 Server R2.

Return to main test.
