Vodafone services restored in flood-affected Queensland

'Temporary' issues with 3 Mobile 3G network reported

Vodafone has restored voice and data services to much of flood-affected south-east Queensland today.

In a network advisory, the telco stated that between Monday and Thursday 10/01/2010 flash flooding had affected two of its transmission facilities in Grantham and Withcott resulting in service outages.

Separately, voice and data services had been restored to a number of locations including Brookfield, Fig Tree Pocket and Jindalee, all affected by power outages. Voice and data services remained at risk in several areas, including Rockhampton and St George, if the current situation deteriorates according to the telco.

The company is also investigating reports of voice and data issues in the state of Victoria, including Mildura, Swan Hill and Lake Culluleraine.

No outages are reported in ACT, WA, SA, and Tasmania.

In a customer advisory yesterday afternoon, the company said engineers throughout Queensland had been working around the clock to ensure Vodafone and 3 mobile phone services remained operational.

“VHA has been using helicopters to fly in back-up generators and diesel fuel to network areas that have lost power in an effort to maintain mobile network services,” the advisory reads.

“Sites that are currently at risk from flooding, are being closely monitored, and we are doing everything possible, including building sandbag barriers and deploying submersible pumps to prevent these sites from flooding.”

The advisory states that mobile phone services in an around Toowoomba had been restored at 1.30pm on Thursday and that there were now less than a dozen Vodafone base stations throughout Queensland that were currently impacted by the floods.

3 Mobile services remained fully operational despite flooding in Brisbane temporarily affecting its 3G data services yesterday afternoon..
