OpenText acquires mobile development vendor

OpenText strengthens mobile-phone support with WeComm purchase

Content management software provider OpenText has acquired London-based mobile application development tool vendor WeComm, the companies announced Tuesday.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. OpenText plans to redeploy WeComm's technology to offer its customers a way to develop device-independent mobile applications, for either internal or public-facing services. WeComm's software will augment OpenText Everywhere, OpenText's mobile extension for its flagship OpenText ECM (enterprise content management) Suite.

Founded in 1999, WeComm offers a cross-platform development platform, called Wave, for creating mobile applications that can run on iPhone, iPad, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Symbian or Java-based smartphones.

WeComm's technology and personnel will be folded into OpenText. OpenText expects to finish the acquisition by the end of this month, assuming it meets all the customary closing conditions.

The WeComm acquisition is the latest in a line of purchases for OpenText. Last month, the company completed its purchase of business process management software provider Metastorm. In October, OpenText acquired communications software provider StreamServe. In February 2010, the company acquired digital content management systems provider Nstein Technologies for US$35 million. And in May 2009, Open Text purchased competing content management software provider Vignette for $310 million.
