NBN Co signs $100 million equipment deal

TE Connectivity to provide network components in contract worth up to $400 million over five years

TE Connectivity, formerly Tyco Electronics, has picked up a $100 million contract to provide network components to NBN Co for construction of the National Broadband Network.

The contract, which involves providing various cables, closures and terminals to contractors building the fibre-to-the-home aspect of the network, will likely be worth $400 million over five years. The equipment would be used for the 14 areas earmarked by the wholesaler as second-release sites for construction later this year, as well as the national rollout.

TE Connectivity also provided similar gear to construct the network's first release mainland sites through ADC, which it acquired in December last year.

The deal marks the last of four contracts around passive optical networking equipment for the project. Previous contracts were awarded to a range of equipment suppliers, including a $1.6 billion round of contracts to Australian companies Warren and Brown Technologies for distribution frames as well as Corning Cable Systems and Prysmian for cabling. Nokia Siemens Networks picked up a $10 million contract for network transmission equipment, worth up to $400 million over 10 years. Alcatel-Lucent is also providing its gigabit passive optical network (GPON) gear to NBN in a contract worth up to $1.5 billion over the construction of the network.

TE Connectivity operates offices in Sydney and Melbourne, and has two factories in Berkeley Vale on the NSW central coast.
