Nokia extends manufacturer warranty to 2 years

Matches norm set under Australian Consumer Law

Nokia has extended warranty on all phones purchased from 31 March this year to 24 months, providing a manufacturer backup to changes made by most major Australian telcos in recent months.

The limited warranty will apply to all phones for two years from date of purchase, provided that it is on or after 31 March.

Under Australian Consumer Law, which came into effect on 1 January this year, telcos were required to offer a phone warranty that matched or exceeded the life of the customer contract.

The competition watchdog has pushed the issue for the past year, with Vodafone Hutchison Australia becoming the first to offer two-year warranties on most phones from January last year.

Telstra followed suit in October that year, while Optus made its changes in January this year under an enforceable undertaking to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

Optus has so far been the only telco to explicitly include Apple’s iPhone under the blanket two-year warranties, however Telstra has told Computerworld Australia that it would comply with all legal obligations.

Vodafone is yet to clarify whether it will offer two-year warranties on the premium smartphones, and as of writing still excludes Apple for the list of manufacturers covered under the 24-month warranty policy on its website.

Nokia’s hardware warranty in Australia lags behind its policy elsewhere, including offering a 24-month warranty for the device and 12-month warranty for accessories in all countries covered under the European Union since 2005. One year warranties are still offered in some other countries, including the United States and Singapore.
