Apple brings Sandy Bridge, Thunderbolt to iMac

Apple has released iMacs running Intel's 2nd Generation Core CPUs

Apple today launched an updated range iMacs, with the desktop computers now offering Intel's Thunderbolt interface and CPUs from Intel's second generation Core i range, dubbed 'Sandy Bridge'.

Apple has retained an all-in-one design that integrates the monitor into the computer's case, with the company offering a 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMac. All iMac models now come with quad-core Intel Core i5 or Core i7 CPUs.

The updated iMacs also incorporate Intel's Thunderbolt interface, which debuted in Apple's MacBook laptop range in February. Thunderbolt, called 'Light Peak' by Intel during its development, was originally to be based on optical connections.

In February Intel announced although the initial Thunderbolt-equipped devices would use copper, fibre optics would increasingly be used. The standard is capable of 10Gbps transfers, compared to USB 3.0's theoretical maximum of 5Gbps.

Each iMac also incorporates a webcam compatible with Apple's FaceTime video calling platform first released on the iPhone 4.

The entry-level 21.5-inch iMac model retails for $1399, while the base 27-ichn iMac is priced at $1949.
