Sony issues FAQ to clear up PSN WTF

PlayStation Network (PSN) once again operational

Sony has issued a frequently asked questions (FAQ) guide for its customers following weeks of non-service for its PlayStation Network (PSN) due to repeated hacking attacks.

According to the company’s social media manager, Jeff Rubenstein, the PlayStation Network is once again operational with the sign-in for PlayStation Network and Qriocity, online gameplay for PS3 and PSP, playback of rental video content on PS3 back up and running.

However some users of PSN were experiencing issues with their password resets following the switching back on of the network.

“If you’ve gone through the process and are waiting for an email from us, please note that the very large number of requests has caused certain ISPs to slow the rate at which recipients get emails from us. Please be patient as the systems work through the backlog,” the FAQ reads.

Customers who had also missed out on new release content due to the PlayStation Store not being updated since April 19th would also be addressed.

“To date, three Tuesday publishes were missed, which included items like Under Siege and the MotorStorm Apocalypse demo,” the FAQ reads. “Rest assured that you won’t miss any of this great content.

“To catch up on the large amount of material, we’ll be publishing to the PlayStation Store multiple times per week once commerce functionality is restored. We will update the PlayStation.Blog with information on timing of the Store restoration, as well as the full list of new content as each publish occurs.”

The switching on follows a series of mixed messages from the entertainment giant earlier this month. Initially it appeared Sony was reneging on a promise to reboot its PlayStation Network and start bringing its 77 million customers back online anytime soon.

Sony posted an update to its PlayStation blog on 6 May stating it was "unaware of the extent of the (network) attack" adding it needs to "conduct further testing of the incredibly complex system" before it can restart its network.

This latest statement contradicts a comment made just the previous day by Sony CEO and Chairman Howard Stringer who said "in the coming days, we will restore service to the networks." Sony had also teased eager PSN gamers dropping hints that the PSN service would soon be restored, stating it had begun "the final stages of internal testing of the new system."

The delay may have something to do with fresh threats of a weekend network attack made earlier this week. Word of an impending attack came from CNET. According the report Sony faced another round of attacks this weekend in retaliation for what many consider its poor handling of the initial PSN attack. Chief among the hacker's beef with Sony, it's assumed, is the company's failure to inform Qriocity users in a timely manner that their financial information had been stolen by hackers until ten days after the breach.
