LG's new Android phone features a 'glasses-free' 3D display.
LG's high-end Optimus 3D smartphone will launch early next month on the Optus network. The LG Optimus 3D's key selling point is its 4.3-inch 3D screen.
The handset is powered by version 2.2 (Froyo) of Android, Google's mobile operating system. According to LG the phone can be upgraded to version 2.3 of Android — Gingerbread — but the vendor has not revealed the update schedule.
Unlike most 3D TVs, the Optimus 3D's capacitive touchscreen screen doesn't require special glasses to view 3D imagery. Like the Nintendo 3DS, the phone uses a parallax barrier in front of the 480x800 LCD screen to create a 3D effect by showing different images to a user's left and right eyes.
The phone is also capable of shooting 3D videos and photographs using two back-mounted five-megapixel cameras.
The LG Optimus 3D is powered by Texas Instruments' OMAP4430 system-on-a-chip, which employs two 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 cores.
The phone will be available for a recommended retail price of $799 or for $0 on a $59 cap plan.
