Version 3.4.2 of the open-source LibreOffice suite is now available and "enterprise-ready," project backers The Document Foundation announced Monday.
Some 300 people contributed more than 23,000 commits to the release, affecting some 5 million lines of code, according to the group, which formed LibreOffice as an offshoot of the OpenOffice.org codebase. The result is a wide range of improvements and tweaks.
The update also "fixes the majority of the most-important bugs identified by users in the previous version, and can be deployed for production needs by most enterprises," the Document Foundation said in a blog post. However, large companies interested in deploying the release should do so with help from a qualified partner, it added.
SUSE and Oracle each account for 25 per cent of the LibreOffice commits, with the latter's coming from changes made to the OpenOffice.org codebase.
Red Hat produced another 20 per cent and one-quarter came from "community volunteers new to the project since our inception," the group said. The remainder were contributed by a combination of long-time contributors, Canonical developers and other companies.
Overall, the contributor list represents a healthy mix of corporate and community input, according to the Document Foundation. The group is also gearing up for the inaugural LIbreOffice conference in October.
Version 3.4.3 is scheduled for release by the end of August, and will include more security and stability fixes, according to a statement.
Oracle submitted the OpenOffice.org code to the Apache Software Foundation in June after deciding to give up on selling a commercial version of the office suite. The Document Foundation expressed interest at the time about working cooperatively with the ASF, but noted that the groups have "very different expectations and norms."
ASF president Jim Jagielski said in a previous interview that he expected the groups to have "very close cooperation."
