Apple has revealed that it has received more than 1 million pre-orders for its next-generation smartphone, the iPhone 4S, in just 24 hours.

According to a statement from the Cupertino-based company, the iPhone 4 held the previous single day pre-order record at 600,000.

The iPhone 4S will be released in Australia on 14 October. Telstra, Optus and Vodafone will all offer the handset. The device was launched last week, prior to the death of Steve Jobs.

The new smartphone retains the case and 'retina' display of of the iPhone 4 but uses a dual-core 1GHz Apple A5 processor and is available in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models.

One of the key talking points of the new phone was Siri, a voice-controlled 'digital assistant'.

The phone also includes a beefed up camera, with a resolution of 8 megapixels and a f/2.4 aperture lens; as well as taking stills, the phone can record Full HD (1080p) video.
