Google has announced it will ditch some of its products and renewable energy initiative as part of its ‘spring cleaning series’.
Google’s vice-president of operations, Urs Hölzle, wrote on the Official Google Blog that some of its products were not performing to the company’s expectations.
“We’re in the process of shutting a number of products which haven’t had the impact we’d hoped for… and ending several which have shown us a different path forward.
“Overall, our aim is to build a simpler, more intuitive, truly beautiful Google user experience.”
The products to be slashed are Google’s Bookmarks Lists, Friend Connect, Gears, Search Timeline, Wave and Knol.
Google ends its cheap renewable energy initiative
Google claims its reason for ditching its Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal initiative is because “other institutions are better positioned than Google to take this research to the next level,” according to the Official Google Blog.
According to Google’s blog, its efforts have “closed” in its research to improve solar power technology, but it will still continue working towards running its data centres more efficiently and will invest more than $850 million in renewable energy technologies.
This is the third wave of Google products shuttered this year, including Code Search and Buzz.
