Tasmanian Dept of Education opts to secure with Symantec

Some 40,000 computers and 700 servers to be equipped with Symantec Endpoint Protection

The Tasmanian Department of Education has chosen security vendor Symantec’s Endpoint Protection solution to secure schools.

The antivirus and personal firewall product will be deployed across Tasmanian primary and secondary schools, colleges, online access centres, state library and department staff.

The solution aims to protect 40,000 computers and 700 servers against adware, botnets, rootkits, spyware, Trojans, viruses and worms.

“The department selected Symantec because of its strong track record in guarding large-scale infrastructures,” said David Briggs, manager of IT infrastructure, in a statement.

“Symantec Endpoint Protection fulfilled our requirement to secure Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux systems.”

According to Briggs, the solution’s flexibility to adapt to different environments, such as mobile, made it ideal for schools to help protect confidential student and staff information on desktops, laptops and mobile devices.

“As online learning continues to become more integrated with traditional classroom learning and mobile devices become more prevalent in the classroom, we’ll see a need for increased, flexible and proactive security as provided by Symantec Endpoint Protection,” he said.

The department used to run a previous version of Symantec Endpoint Protection across 350 locations across Tasmania.

The Department of Education purchased Symantec Endpoint Protection through Alphawest, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Optus, after an extensive Request for Tender process earlier this year.
