The Internet Industry Association (IIA) has called for participating internet service providers (ISPs) and security vendors to contribute to a review of the IIA’s iCode.
The iCode is a voluntary industry code that is used by ISPs to help fight cyber-crime through protective systems and co-operation on reporting and disclosure.
End users are redirected to iCode's home page if their ISP's systems show their computer has been infected by malware where they can receive resources such as online tools to diagnose and fix infected machines or home visits for the technically inept.
IIA director, John Lindsay, said in a statement the review was aimed at ensuring the iCode continues as an effective voluntary code and meets current internet safety challenges.
The iCode has been considered for adoption in the US and Europe. It has been in use in Australia since December 2010 with more than 90 per cent of Australian ISPs signed up to the voluntary code.
"We are out to tackle the millions of infected machines which, on a global scale contribute to almost all spam, threaten personal data privacy and challenge even national security,” Lindsay said in a statement.
“They are the weapon of choice for today's cyber-criminal. Our aim is to reduce the pool from which they draw."
The iCode review’s findings will be discussed at an IIA forum during National Cyber Security Awareness Week on 14 June.
