Visionstream wins $71 million contract with Royal Adelaide Hospital

Network to provide 150Tbps of switching capacity for state-of-the-art new hospital.

Visionstream will build network infrastructure for the new Royal Adelaide Hospital to be completed in 2016, under a $71 million deal announced today with design and construction partners Hansen Yuncken Leighton Contractors Joint Venture. Visionstream is a subsidiary of the Leighton Telecommunications Group.

Under the deal, Visionstream will provide all core, distribution, edge switching and wireless access points in the hospital. It will install an IP PABX unified communications system, including wired and wireless handsets, as well as a wireless real-time location system to track patients and equipment.

The network will provide the hospital with 150 Tbps of switching capacity, Visionstream said. It will support all operational data and voice services, patient meal ordering, lighting control, telephony, access control, medical imaging and audio-visual content distribution, among other things, the company said.

The project includes the design, installation, testing and commissioning of 550 network devices, 25,000 physical network connections, 2000 wireless access points, 4200 fixed phones, 550 wireless phones and “thousands” of tracked RFID tags, Visionstream said. The network will provide redundance and availability equivalent to other leading healthcare facilities.

The technology is meant to provide safe care, reduce time spent on “menial and administrative tasks”, and increase clinician-patient time, Visionstream said. It’s also energy efficient, using access switches equipped with tools to measure and regulate power use.

“Our integrated wireless networks, combined with tagging and tracking functionality, will assist medical administrators to manage both, patient intake and care, as well as health care equipment throughout the hospital enabling new Royal Adelaide Hospital to break new ground in the provision of quality healthcare,” said Visionstream General Manager, Allan Bradford.

Visionstream has 15 local employees working on the hospital contract and plans to create up to 25 new ICT jobs in Adelaide, the company said.

HP Australia announced a contract with the Royal Adelaide Hospital last year.
