NBN satellite ground station to be built at Broken Hill

NBN Co has now announced the location for nine satellite ground stations for the NBN.

A National Broadband Network (NBN) satellite ground station will be built at Broken Hill in New South Wales.

The facility will comprise two 13.5 metre-wide satellite dishes and will service Menindee, Purnamoota, Yanco Glen and Kanbara.

The satellite ground station is expected to be operational by 2015.

“Broken Hill is ideally situated to play a central role in delivering better broadband to the outback,” Matt Dawson, NBN Co’s program director, satellites, said in a statement.

“It has the ideal climate and is close to reliable power and other infrastructure including the NBN’s core fibre transit network– the main fibre transmission lines linking towns and our exchanges.”

The roll out of the NBN in Broken Hill will also include fibre in the city centre.

A total of 10 satellite ground stations are being built around Australia to facilitate the delivery of the NBN at speeds of up to 12Mbps.

NBN Co recently signed contracts with two companies worth $180 million to build the satellite ground stations around Australia.

So far the locations for eight other satellite ground stations have been announced, including:

Moonyoonooka, Brown Range and Binduli in WA

Bourke, and Wolumla (near Merimbula) in NSW

Geeveston in Tasmania

Ceduna in South Australia

Roma in Queensland

Until the satellite ground stations are built, NBN Co’s Interim Satellite Service will provide the NBN at speeds of up to 6Mbps to around 17,000 premises.

NBN Co’s Long Term Satellite Service will deliver the NBN to around 200,000 premises in rural and remote areas of Australia.
