Australia’s winter grain crop production is set to rise overall despite patchy rainfall in some regions, according to government statistics.
The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) has predicted that winter grain production will be around 36 million tonnes, 2.8 million more than the previous season.
While the forecast is good for Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria, the prospects for Queensland and New South Wales have been dissipated by below average rainfall.
Looking ahead, the area planted for summer crops is likely to be 5% lower in 2009-10, reflecting a lack of irrigation water, ABARE added.
