Holden develops car for US police fleets

Australian-built police cars will soon be patrolling the streets of North America, Holden said yesterday.

The Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle (PPV) will be available for ordering next year and could hit the streets by early 2011.

The car comes from the same family as the Holden Caprice line, Holden said, and has already been showcased at this year’s International Association of Chiefs of Police convention.

“North American law enforcement fleets account for about 70,000 sales a year so securing a fraction of those sales would be a major manufacturing boost for [parent company GM’s] operations in Australia,” Holden executive director for sales John Elsworth said.

Holden already supplies cars for Australian police fleets.
