ASX to trade in renewable energy futures

The Australian Securities Exchange (ASX: ASX) will commence trading in renewable energy futures and options from November 24.

ASX said it had received regulatory approval to trade in Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) and Certified Emission Reduction (CER) futures and option contracts.

The introduction of these new certificates will form part of the Australian Government’s Renewable Energy Target Scheme.

An ASX spokesperson said the new options will “enable market participants to manage
their market risks and make informed investment decisions about climate change and related Government policies.”

If the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme passes parliament, ASX will also list futures and options on Australian Emission Units (AEU).
