James Packer has defended Crown’s casinos from what he called “unfair and unjustified” criticism from anti-gambling campaigners, insisting that they many economic and social benefits to Australia.
Speaking at the Crown Limited (ASX:CWN) AGM today, Packer said the casino had paid “literally billions of dollars” in gaming and related taxes, and formed an essential part of Australia’s international tourist trade.
“Australia needs world-class casino complexes to stay competitive with its Asian neighbours and attract international tourists to Australia,” he said.
“The contribution Crown makes to tourism, employment, training, urban development, community partnerships and government revenues…rarely gets reported.”
Packer said Crown was weathering the financial storm, and is well placed for the future.
