Optus helps boost SingTel profits

Telecom company SingTel (ASX:SGT) has announced that it boosted its groupwide customer base to 285 million last quarter – an increase of 23% year-on-year.

The company also reported a 24% rise in net income to around $805.8 million during the accounting period.

Australian subsidiary Optus grew its postpaid customer base by 164,000, and now has over 4 million prepaid subscribers.

But a tightened churn policy resulted in the deactivation of 272,000 inactive prepaid users, leading to a net decline of 145,000 prepaid customers.

Optus’s operating revenue increased 4.8% to $2.3 billion, while its ebitda rose 3.6% to $529 million.

Optus meanwhile announced it would be upgrading its Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) cable networks in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to support speeds of up to 100-Mbps. The upgrade should be complete by mid-2010.
