K2 expects to launch silicon improvements in 2011

Energy company K2 Energy (ASX:KTE) has revealed that it should be ready to begin commercialising its licensed advancements in silicon technologies next year.

K2 solar division K2 Solar has licensed Mears Silicon Technology (MST), developed by private corporation Mears Technologies. Mears has been founded by Robert Mears, a leading photonics expert.

MST has applications in solar cells and in silicon computer chips. The technology will initially be commercialised for solar cells, with initial testing to begin later this year, but K2 said it also planned to capitalise on the $250 billion global chip market.

Under the licensing arrangement, K2 provides Mears with an annual R&D budget of around $1 million, and both companies will split the profits from the technology equally.
