Australia has come in as the 8th least corrupt country in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI).
The CPI is based on 13 surveys and is held annually by the international organisation.
This year, New Zealand topped the index as the country with least corrupt perception followed by Denmark in second place. Singapore and Sweden tied for third while Switzerland came in at number 5.
In equal sixth was Finland and The Netherlands while Australia, Canada and Iceland tied in 8th.
At the other end of the table, Somalia had the dubious honour of being the most corrupt with Afghanistan, Myanmar and Sudan not far behind.
In the Asia-Pacific region TI said the “global financial crisis and political transformation in many Asian countries during 2008 exposed fundamental weaknesses in both the financial and political systems and demonstrated the failures in policy, regulations, oversight, and enforcement mechanisms”.
As a result 13 of the region’s 32 countries results slid. However, TI noted significant improvements in the populous nations of Indonesia and China while Bangladesh is also improving.
