Telecom NZ creates Christchurch recovery team

Telecom NZ (ASX:TEL) has appointed its general manager for customer experience, Trish Keith, to lead up a dedicated Christchurch recovery team.

The team will oversee the restoration work required, both short and long-term, after the February 22 earthquake.

Ralph Chivers, Telecom's former head of government and industry relations, has been appointed a full-time program director for the project.

The rest of the team will be drawn as needed from all parts of the business, Telecom NZ said.

CEO Paul Reynolds said the establishment of a dedicated team was vital.

“Telecom NZ is one of Christchurch's biggest employers and it's hugely important to us that we support our people in Christchurch,” he said.

The immediate focus will be getting around 1,600 employees - that had been working in buildings that are within the Christchurch red zone - back to work, he said.

The 6.4 magnitude Christchurch earthquake knocked out parts of Telecom NZ's networks, and while services were mostly restored by that afternoon, the quake left much damage to deal with.

TEL shares fell 0.34% in Monday's trading to $1.455.
