Online movie rental company Quickflix (ASX:QFX) has signed a deal to provide its streaming service on Sony's PlayStation Network.
Quickflix said it will provide an unlimited movie viewing service for a subscription fee to the roughly 1.3 million Australian PlayStation 3 owners.
The company did not disclose how many of the 50,000 or so titles that can be rented by mail will be made available for streaming, but said the online catalogue will be “constantly changing.”
Quickflix CEO Chris Taylor called the agreement “a significant moment in the evolution of IPTV-delivered entertainment in Australia,” as well as a milestone for the company.
The deal builds on the prior agreement with Sony to stream the service through the Bravia line of internet-enabled TVs and home theatre devices, reached in July.
It is also reminiscent of the arrangements Quickflix' US counterpart, Netflix, has in place for all three of the major consoles.
Taylor said the PlayStation is estimated to account for over 30% of streams served by the leading movie subscription providers in the US and the UK
QFX shares grew 2.56% on Friday to $0.080.
