Global Switch building first stage of Sydney East data centre

$300 million facility will be located next to company’s existing data centre, Sydney West

After receiving building approval from the NSW Department of Planning in 2010, Global Switch has begun constructing stage one of its $300 million data centre called Sydney East.

Growth in demand for data centre capacity in Australia led the company to announce plans for the 24,000 square metre facility which will be located next to its existing Sydney West facility near the central business district.

The first stage, which constitutes about one third of the total project, will be completed by the first quarter of 2014.

Global Switch executive chairman John Corcoran said Australia is an “extremely attractive” investment country given the growth in domestic demand and the geo-political benefits it offers to multinational companies.

“With the Asia-Pacific region at the centre of global growth, Australia is in a unique position as a safe and reliable location from which to service that market,” he said in a statement.

According to Corcoran, Global Switch had already signed up anchor tenants for over 50 per cent of the first stage of Sydney East. While he was not able to publicly name the companies, they include a software and services firm, global systems integrator, multinational IT corporation and a managed services provider.

Global Switch opened Sydney West in 2002. It operates 290,000 square metres of data centres across nine locations in Asia Pacific and Europe.
