NT government trials online vehicle registration

The QuickPay station will allow customers to renew driver licences, registrations online

In a bid to cut queue times, the Northern Territory (NT) government has begun a trial of a QuickPay online Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR) station in Parap, Darwin.

The QuickPay station is a new project allowing customers to renew vehicle registrations online if an inspection is not due and driver licences if there is no eyesight test required.

NT Transport minister Adam Giles said it would help customers who may not have phone or Internet access at home to complete their vehicle registration online.

“The QuickPay station is being trialled at the busiest MVR in Darwin for the next four months and once we identify how popular it is, we can look at putting them in other locations,” he said in a statement.

Giles added that Territorians have “better things to do” than waiting to be served in an MVR office. Instructions will be provided at the station for the public to use and staff will be available to assist if needed.

According to NT government data, nearly half of all vehicle registration renewals and one in five licence renewals in the NT are completed online.

Online registration renewals had “skyrocketed” in 2012 from 2316 to 6146 after the government promoted MVR QuickPay online and phone services, said Giles.
