Nokia announces Lumia 720 availability

Nokia's new Lumia 720 Windows Phone will be available in Australia in the coming weeks

Nokia's new Lumia 720 Windows Phone will be available in Australia in the coming weeks, the company announced today.

The Lumia 720 is a lightweight, colourful smartphone that Nokia claims has the "best camera experience of any mid-range smartphone."

It was unveiled globally in February at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, Spain.

The Lumia 720 will be sold through Vodafone and Virgin Mobile in Australia for $429 outright. Virgin Mobile will sell the device from Thursday 4 April while Vodafone "will announce availability in the coming weeks".

Nokia also announced that selected other retailers will be receiving stock of the Lumia 720 from Wednesday 10 April.

The Lumia 720 has a 6.7-megapixel rear-facing camera with a Carl Zeiss lens and an f/1.9 aperture.

Nokia claims the aperture is bigger than almost any high-end smartphone on the market and will therefore capture better photos in low-light conditions.

"As we continue to grow our smartphone offering, devices such as the Lumia 720 give breadth and depth to our Windows Phone 8 portfolio," said Nokia Australia’s managing director, Steve Lewis.

"Smartphones like the Lumia 720 are critical to Nokia’s strategy as they allow us to bring familiar features such as high-end design, quality hardware, unparalleled imaging capabilities and a rich navigation experience to a wider audience."

The Lumia 720 has a 4.3in 'Clear Black' display with a resolution of 480x800. The phone is powered by a 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, has 512MB RAM and comes with 8GB of internal memory.

Like all of Nokia's Windows Phone 8 devices, the Lumia 720 comes preloaded with the company's suite of exclusive apps, Drive, Transit, Maps and Music.
