STORserver enters cloud business

STORserver is offering three classes of public and private cloud services

STORserver, a maker of backup appliances, announced this week it is offering both private and public cloud backup services with archive and disaster recovery options.

STORserver announced a private cloud backup and disaster recovery service that is available to IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) and STORServer customers. The service includes a STORServer Backup Appliance with automated backup and disaster recovery features aimed at users who want to move away from tape or who do not have a disaster recovery solution.

The package includes offsite backup to a second appliance as the target to copy the primary TSM or STORServer Backup Appliance.

The public cloud disaster recovery service provides a per-unit based monthly or annual service charge for copying backup or archive data to a remote location.

STORServer offers disaster recovery on a per gigabyte or terabyte charge basis that will replicate data from an existing onsite TSM or STORServer Backup Appliance to a certified STORServer public service provider. No additional onsite hardware or software investment is necessary.

The company's third service offering is backup, archive and disaster recovery to a public cloud. The service does not require a TSM or STORServer installation. Purchase and installation of software clients and database agents, however, are required. The backup, archive and disaster recovery service is charged on a per gigabyte or terabyte basis for copying and storing backup or archive data to a certified STORServer public service provider.

"As with all STORServer data protection solutions, deduplication, encryption and compression functionality are performed at no extra cost," Bill Smoldt, president of STORServer, said in a statement. "Data transfer speed is only limited by your network connection. Regardless of the method you choose, all data is secure and recoverable at the service level that you require."
