A trial has been launched at the University of Melbourne’s Shepparton campus which aims to deliver dental education to regional Victoria using high-speed broadband and IPTV.
The Uni TV trail will include live broadcasts, educational videos on-demand and other resources which will be accessible on the Uni TV multi-channel Internet protocol TV system.
The 18-month project will include a six-month trial by the Institute for a Broadband Enabled Society in collaboration with the Melbourne Dental School at the University of Melbourne. It will also be delivered in partnership with Ericsson Australia, AARNet and Panasonic Australia.
“As part of the trial, students and clinicians on placement in Shepparton will have the opportunity to view live and pre-recorded broadcasts of lectures, seminars and surgical demonstrations from the Melbourne Oral Health Training and Education Centre,” Gordon Rich-Phillips, Victorian Technology Minister, said in a statement.
Australia’s Academic and Research Network (AARNet) will provide connectivity for the distribution of high definition and 3D content from the Melbourne Dental School to students, while a dentist in Brunswick will access Uni TV in his home via a National Broadband Network (NBN) connection.
“The IPTV delivery model has the potential to transform health and dental education in regional communities. It gives students access to high quality instruction by leaders in the field without having to travel to Melbourne,” Ken Clarke, senior research fellow at the Institute for a Broadband-Enabled Society, said in a statement.
The trial has been funded as part of an $18 million Broadband Enabled Innovation program. The Broadband Enabled Innovation program provides funding to organisations to develop technologies which utilise high-capacity broadband.
