CA Technologies has unveiled an app that enables C-level executives to manage IT investments from their iPads.

CA Clarity Playbook – created by CA's internal engineers – is a software-as-a-service (SaaS) app claimed to address the disconnect between CIOs and business strategists. Users can also access the app from a tablet or desktop running a HTML5-compatible Web browser.

"We now live in this any time, anywhere world and at a conference, all of you want [is] access to information sitting where you are," Lokesh Jindal, GM, service and portfolio management at CA Technologies, told attendees at CA World in Las Vegas.

"The power of business applications have to be delivered to you wherever you want them to be – and so this was designed as an iPad-first application and then as a secondary perspective on the Web."

The app integrates with CA Clarity PPM and other record systems to provide C-level executives with a "dashboard-style" mobile workspace to define and manage project goals using information from business systems, view financials in real time, and evaluate the impact of new priorities on business plans.

Jindal said the many businesses today are "truly technology businesses and IT and business cannot be separated any more."

"The need for the business to react to change as and when it happens [is] critical and the planning needs to move from annual process to a continuous perpetual process so that [business] can become more agile."

Jeffrey M Kaplan, MD at strategic consultancy, THINKstrategies, said executives need the same kind of visibility into IT as they have into sales pipelines and supply chains.

"It has simple become impractical fro them to continue depending on periodic second-hand IT reporting that can't be dynamically queried and is often out-of-date by the time it arrives on their desks."
