Amazon launches local cloud support operation

AWS Australian and New Zealand customers hit 14,000

Amazon Web Services today launched its Sydney-based technical support centre. AWS flagged the opening of a technical support operation last year, when it launched the Sydney infrastructure region for its cloud computing services.

AWS vice-president Adam Selipsky told Computerworld that the launch of a local support operation did not necessarily map to the launches of local infrastructure regions.

“I think the support centre really maps to ‘where are the customers’,” Selipsky said. “You may think it would correlate pretty well to infrastructure regions, but it doesn’t have to… So where we have significant customer base who is sophisticated, has a lot of questions, is deploying rapidly, wants really a partner in those deployments -- that’s where we’re going to provide a really heavy dose of support resources.”

The centre will be linked to Amazon’s global support operation, providing support to English-speaking customers in other time zones as well as support for Australian and New Zealand customers.

AWS today also revealed that its customer base in Australia and New Zealand has exceeded 14,000.

“There actually has been very significant increase in adoption of AWS by Australian and new Zealand customers in the five-and-a-bit months since we launched the Sydney Region,” Selipsky said.

“In terms of the Sydney infrastructure region, it’s grown very rapidly since we launched and is one of the fastest growing infrastructure regions. If you measure time equals zero to time equals five and a half months, it is one of the fastest growing regions that we’ve ever launched so we’re really happy to see that we’re very optimistic about the infrastructure and the customer growth that we’ve seen during that time.”

Local AWS customers include the Commonwealth Bank, Fairfax and Suncorp Group.

From today, AWS has also begun offering access to its online marketplace, which allows customers to deploy third-party applications on the Sydney Region of Amazon’s cloud. More than 100 applications are currently available in the Sydney infrastructure region.
